Burglaries in private homes:
How can you protect yourself against them?
As a homeowner, there are various measures you can take to protect yourself against burglary—ranging from secure doors and windows to surveillance cameras and alarm systems. Ideally, you should approach security comprehensively, as a house or apartment only becomes truly secure when the individual measures work in tandem. Yet even then, there is no guarantee that burglars won’t manage to get inside. This is where a safe plays a crucial role.
Everything is strewn about, drawers and cupboard doors have been left wide open, the floor is dirty, and the sheer force with which this chaos was created seems to hang heavily in the air. An oppressive feeling takes hold of you immediately, as though two invisible hands were tightening around your throat and refusing to let go. A burglary has taken place here – a nightmare scenario you want to protect yourself against as effectively as possible.
What would you miss most?
If burglars manage to enter your home despite all precautions, it is crucial that your valuables are not easily accessible. Hiding them in a drawer or a locked cupboard, however, is not enough. During a burglary, rooms are searched without care, drawers are pulled open and everything is turned upside down in an attempt to find anything that appears valuable as quickly as possible. It is therefore worth asking yourself in advance which possessions you would miss most if they were stolen. These are the items that deserve particular protection. The value of an object is deeply personal. What may look to a thief like nothing more than an attractive accessory worth taking can, to you, be a treasured family heirloom with enormous sentimental value – something no insurance payout could ever truly replace.

Despite the considerable force and various tools used, this attempt to break into the safe was fortunately unsuccessful.
Addressing this subject is not about frightening yourself. It is about being aware that a burglary can happen, considering the possible consequences and then deciding for yourself which precautions you want to take. Only by doing so can you protect yourself as effectively as possible against burglary and theft.
A safe does more than simply protect your most valuable possessions. In the event of a break-in, it can also draw attention away from other areas of the home by becoming the burglars’ main focus. A high-quality safe is designed to withstand forceful attacks and ensure that your valuables remain exactly where they belong. It is therefore worth taking the time to look into the subject carefully before making a purchase, as there are significant differences in quality. Do not simply settle for the first model you come across at your nearest DIY store.

WALDIS certified safes provide reliable, long-lasting protection for valuables of all kinds.
Security is not always visible at first glance
Even for experts, it is difficult to assess a safe’s resistance simply by looking at it. Nevertheless, there are a number of features that can provide useful indications of its level of security. Safes that are opened with a key should generally be avoided. Modern high-security safes are equipped with electronic combination locks which, in addition to the standard opening code, can offer a range of further functions. These may include temporary lockouts after repeated incorrect code entries or the option of setting a duress code. In an emergency, such a code can open the safe while simultaneously and discreetly alerting a security monitoring centre. Externally mounted hinges can also present a security risk, as they create additional points of attack where burglars may attempt to use leverage tools.
The most important indicator, however, is hidden inside the safe: the certification label. It shows whether the safe has been independently certified and, if so, according to which standard and resistance grade.
The EN 1143–1 standard is the most widely recognised standard in this field. It classifies safes into resistance grades 1 to 10, with resistance grade 7 being the highest classification awarded to date. The higher the resistance grade, the higher the value of the contents that can generally be stored and insured in the safe. Ultimately, however, the amount that can be insured always depends on the individual insurance provider. For this reason, purchasing a safe is often best done in consultation with your insurer. Here, you can compare the resistance grades of all WALDIS safes.
